Interview
Kannst Du Dich kurz vorstellen?
My name is James Doak, and I’m originally from Jersey in the Channel Islands. From a young age I was fascinated by photography, I still remember saving up all my pocket money at the age of seven to buy a disposable camera and taking my first photos in the garden. That small beginning sparked a lifelong passion that has grown into a full-time career. For nearly 10 years, I’ve been living and working as a professional photographer in Austria, now based in Graz. Over this time, I’ve built up a wide range of experience, working across different genres such as weddings, fashion, product, sports, and portrait photography. I’ve had the privilege of working as Head Photographer for companies like Niceshops and Novritsch, as well as collaborating as a freelance photographer for GEPA Pictures, and I continue to run my own photography business, specializing in weddings. What drives me most is the ability to capture moments that will never come again, moments of love, joy, and human connection. My philosophy is simple: photography should tell a story, hold the viewer’s attention, and preserve memories in an authentic and timeless way.Was macht dir an der Fotografie am meisten Spaß?
What I enjoy most about photography is the opportunity to create something lasting out of something fleeting. Moments come and go in an instant, whether it’s a glance, a smile, or a gesture, but with photography, they can be preserved forever. That ability to freeze time is something that has always fascinated me. Over the years, I’ve worked in many areas of photography, from commercial product shoots to fashion and sports events, but what consistently brings me the most joy is the personal connection with people and the emotions I get to capture. Weddings, for example, are full of raw, authentic emotion, and I love being able to give couples images that they will treasure for the rest of their lives. I also enjoy the creative challenge that comes with every shoot, no two days are the same, and each situation requires me to adapt, whether to light, location, or the personalities of the people I’m photographing. On top of that, I value that photography allows me to make a living doing something I truly love. There’s nothing more rewarding than delivering a set of photos to a client and seeing how much those images mean to them.Kannst Du Dich noch an Deine ersten Hochzeitsfotos erinnern?
Yes, I remember my first wedding photos very clearly. Like many photographers, I felt a mixture of excitement and nerves. Weddings are incredibly important events, and as a photographer you carry the responsibility of documenting moments that can never be recreated. For my first wedding, I put my heart into every single frame, making sure to capture not just the formal moments but also the smaller, candid interactions, the laughter, the hugs, the emotions that tell the real story of the day. Looking back, I can see how far I’ve grown since then, both technically and artistically, but those first wedding photos gave me the confidence to continue down this path. They showed me how powerful photography can be, not just for me as the photographer, but for the couple and their families who get to relive that day through the images. That wedding reinforced my belief that photography is about much more than pressing the shutter; it’s about creating a visual legacy. Even today, I carry the lessons I learned from that first wedding with me: preparation is essential, flexibility is key, and the most important thing is to focus on capturing emotion. Mit welcher Ausrüstung fotografierst Du am liebsten?
I prefer to work with the most up to date professional equipment available, as it allows me to deliver high quality results consistently. Over the years, I’ve used a variety of camera systems, and my choice of equipment always depends on the specific needs of the project. For weddings, I rely on fast, reliable cameras with excellent low-light performance, since so many important moments happen in natural or challenging lighting conditions. I also use a range of prime and zoom lenses to give me flexibility, from wide shots that capture the atmosphere to intimate portraits that focus on the smallest details. That being said, I’ve always believed that equipment is only part of the equation. The best gear in the world won’t make up for lack of vision or understanding of light. A professional photographer’s real strength lies in their ability to read a scene, anticipate moments, and use light to create atmosphere. That’s why I balance investing in new technology with continuing my education and refining my craft. Tools are important, but they’re only as powerful as the photographer using them. My philosophy is simple: experience and creativity matter more than the brand name on your camera. Was macht Deiner Meinung nach ein gutes Hochzeitsfoto aus?
A good wedding photo is one that tells a story and captures genuine emotion. Weddings are filled with countless moments, both big and small, and the role of the photographer is to preserve them in a way that feels authentic and timeless. To me, a strong wedding photo should hold the viewer’s attention, it should make someone stop, feel, and remember. It’s not just about beautiful compositions or perfect lighting (although those are important); it’s about the emotion in the image. Whether it’s the tear in a parent’s eye, the laughter of friends, or the quiet intimacy between the couple, those are the details that make a photo truly meaningful. I also believe that light plays a central role in wedding photography. Understanding and shaping light allows me to create mood, drama, or softness, depending on what the moment calls for. Finally, a good wedding photo should stand the test of time. Trends come and go, but the best images are those that remain powerful and relevant decades later. For me, success is when my photos become part of a couple’s history, images they’ll look back on with the same joy 50 years from now. Was machst du, wenn es am Hochzeitstag regnet?
Rain on a wedding day can seem like a challenge at first, but I see it as an opportunity to create something truly unique. Weather is part of the story of the day, and rather than fighting it, I embrace it. Rain can add drama, romance, and atmosphere to photos in a way that sunshine often can’t. For example, reflections in puddles, raindrops falling softly on an umbrella, or a couple embracing under the stormy sky can all make for unforgettable images. Of course, preparation is important, I always have backup plans for indoor locations or sheltered spots, and I bring the right equipment to protect my gear. But some of the most memorable wedding photos I’ve ever taken were in less than perfect weather. Rain also encourages couples to relax and enjoy the moment, because in the end, what matters is being together, not the weather. My role is to reassure them, adapt to the situation, and turn what might feel like an obstacle into an advantage. I always tell couples: rain on your wedding day isn’t bad luck, it’s just another chance to create beautiful, authentic memories. Welche Tipps würdest Du einem Hobbyfotografen geben, um bessere Fotos zu machen?
The best advice I can give to hobby photographers is to practice as much as possible and not to be afraid of mistakes. Every time you take a photo, you’re training your eye to see better, and every mistake you make is an opportunity to learn. Shoot as often as you can, in as many different situations as possible, indoors, outdoors, in bright sunlight, in low light. This will help you understand how light behaves and how to work with it. Just as important is editing your work. By reviewing your photos carefully and experimenting with post processing, you’ll quickly see where you can improve and how to bring out the best in your images. I also believe strongly in investing in education. That doesn’t always mean expensive courses, it can be online classes, tutorials, or simply studying the work of photographers you admire. The key is to always keep learning. Finally, remember that gear isn’t everything. While good equipment helps, what really matters is vision, patience, and practice. Invest your time and energy in developing your craft, and your photos will continue to get better with every shot you take.
